Thanks to the work of climate researchers at the World Meteorological Organization, a new record was set for the coldest temperatures in the northern hemisphere, measured in 1991 in Greenland and was -69.6 degrees Celsius.
That is two degrees colder than the previous records, Guardian reported. Searching the Station's thermal record archives, researchers found that the coldest temperature readings were recorded at Greenland's automatic meteorological station in the middle of winter almost 30 years ago. It is two degrees colder than previously known degrees.
The Greenland station recorded minus 69.6 degrees Celsius on December 22, 1991, which is significantly lower than the -67.8 degrees Celsius observed in Russia in February 1892 and in Oymyakon in Russia in January 1933.
However, the lowest temperature in the world was recorded in the southern hemisphere on July 21, 1983, at an Antarctic station and was -89.2 degrees Celsius.
