The Sloan Digital Survey project involved hundreds of scientists from a dozen institutions around the world, collecting over 20 years of data about the universe.
It is a mapping of the universe with telescopes, and with the help of these measurements, more than two million galaxies are covered, CNN reported.
"We are well aware of the ancient history of the universe and its recent history of expansion, but there is a gap in how it evolved. "We've been working for five years to fill that gap and come to some of the most important insights into cosmology in the last decade," said astrophysicist Kyle Dawson of the University of Utah, who led the study, which published the results of the project.
The 3D map revealed early materials that defined the structure of the universe, dating back to when it was 300 years old. Researchers have measured how far the universe has spread throughout history.
The team also identified a mysterious invisible component of the universe called dark energy, which caused the expansion of space to accelerate six billion years ago.
