Scientists are working on an artificial sun worth 20 billion euros

Fourteen years after receiving the green light for the project, a group of scientists based in France yesterday began working on a device that should show whether nuclear fusion, which is the source of energy from the Sun, can be a safe and sustainable source of energy on Earth.

"The ITER device will be composed of almost one million components, and the first experiments should start in December 2025. "Fusion provides clean and safe energy without carbon," said a statement from 35 signatory countries.

As many call it - "The World's Largest Jigsaw" will be compiled in the small municipality of Saint-Paul-les-Durans in southern France by scientists from around the world. The ITER Group consists of the 27 members of the European Union plus Switzerland, the United Kingdom, India, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States.

But this "artificial sun" has been criticized by some environmentalists. They see it as a scientific illusion with no guarantee that it will work and that all this will be a "financial abyss", as commented by Greenpeace.

"Fusion is safe, uses small amounts of fuel and has no physical potential for accidents. "Fusion fuel can be found in seawater and lithium, which means there are enough sources for the next few million years," the report said.

According to scientists, the reactor could reach its full power in 2035.

The venture begins after a five-year delay. The budget for the project today is almost 20 billion euros, three times more than originally planned.
